The Golden Circle

Why → How → What — working from the inside out.

In this module

Where we’re headed

Simon Sinek’s Golden Circle is one of the most powerful frameworks for understanding purpose.

Most people start with what they do. Inspired people start with why. This module teaches you to work from the inside out.

The framework

The Golden Circle

Three rings, from the outside in:

WHAT — the outer ring

What you do: your job title, your tasks, your products. Everyone knows their what.

HOW — the middle ring

How you do it: your unique approach, your differentiating value. Some people know their how.

WHY — the center

Why you do it: your purpose, your cause, your belief. Very few can clearly articulate their why.

From the research

Start With Why

The Golden Circle maps directly onto how the brain works. What corresponds to the neocortex — rational, analytical thought. Why and how correspond to the limbic brain — feelings, trust, loyalty, decision-making.

“People don’t buy WHAT you do, they buy WHY you do it.”

— Simon Sinek

This applies to your own life too. You can’t logic your way into purpose. It’s felt, not calculated.

From the research

Let Your Life Speak

Palmer describes the quiet pain of living outside-in — when your what doesn’t match your why:

“I had found a respectable way to live a life that was not my own — and it was slowly draining the life out of me.”

— Parker Palmer (paraphrased)

When what you do aligns with why you exist, you live “divided no more.” The external and the internal finally match.

From the research

The Path Made Clear

“Align your personality with your purpose, and no one can touch you.”

— Oprah Winfrey

When your why, how, and what line up, you become unstoppable — not through force, but through integrity. Who you are and what you do become the same thing.

This module’s practice

Draft your Why statement

Sinek offers a simple formula for articulating your Why:

The formula

To ____________ so that ____________.

(the contribution you make) → (the impact of that contribution)

Examples

“To inspire people to do the things that inspire them, so that together we can change our world.”

“To help people feel seen, so that they know they’re not alone.”

Draft yours this week. It doesn’t need to be perfect — it needs to be true.

Where it converges

Why alignment matters

Alignment is the whole point:

Start at the center. Why first, then how, then what.

Why is felt, not calculated. The limbic brain decides; logic follows.

Divided-no-more is the goal. Inner truth and outer life, matched.

Integrity is power. When who you are and what you do align, you’re unshakeable.

Reflect

Reflection

Write as much or as little as you like — a sentence is plenty.

1. Have you been living outside-in (starting with what) or inside-out (starting with why)?

Saved · Kara can see this

2. When have you felt most aligned — when your what and why matched perfectly?

Saved · Kara can see this

3. What would change if you led with WHY in how you introduce yourself and your work?

Refine Your Why

A first draft of a Why statement is a starting point. This pressure-tests it until it rings true.

Write your rough Why

Use the ‘To ___ so that ___’ formula.

Read it aloud

Does it make you feel something, or just sound nice?

Cut every word that isn’t true

Trim until only the real part remains.

Test it against a real choice

Would it actually help you decide something this week?

Your refined Why statement:

Check in with Kara

What’s your why, in one honest line?

Saved · shared with Kara

“When your what is aligned with your why, work stops feeling like work — it becomes an expression of who you are.”

— after Simon Sinek
