Tuning into what energizes and what drains.
Your body, emotions, and energy are constantly giving you feedback. Every day, they tell you what’s aligned with your purpose — and what isn’t.
Most of us have learned to override these signals. We push through exhaustion, ignore our gut, and wonder why we feel lost. This module is about learning to listen again.
What fills you and what drains you isn’t random preference — it’s information. Treated as data instead of dismissed, your energy becomes one of the most honest guides you have.
Palmer offers two reframes that change how you read your own signals.
“Self-care is never a selfish act — it is simply good stewardship of the only gift I have, the gift I was put on earth to offer to others.”
— Parker Palmer
Paying attention to what depletes you isn’t self-indulgent. It’s essential — you can’t give from an empty vessel.
“Our limitations are not obstacles to be overcome, but gifts to be received.”
— Parker Palmer
What you can’t do is just as telling as what you can. Your limits show you who you are — and who you’re not meant to be.
Oprah describes a pattern she’s seen in countless lives — signals that escalate until you listen.
“The whispers come first. If you ignore them, they get louder. And if you still don’t listen, you get a brick upside the head.”
— Oprah Winfrey
How the signals escalate
Whispers — vague dissatisfaction, restlessness, fatigue
Louder — recurring conflicts, health issues, relationship strain
Bricks — burnout, crisis, forced change
Better to listen to the whispers than wait for the brick.
Notice what your energy is telling you:
Activities where time flies
Conversations that leave you energized
Work that doesn’t feel like work
Tasks you dread
People who exhaust you
Environments that make you smaller
Where do you feel expansion? Contraction?
What does your gut know that your mind ignores?
This isn’t about judging the drains away — it’s about noticing the pattern.
Listening to your life means reading three signals:
Self-care is stewardship. Tending your energy serves your gift.
Limits are guidance. What you can’t do tells you who you are.
Whispers escalate. Listen early, before the brick.
Energy is honest. It knows what your mind talks you out of.
Write as much or as little as you like — a sentence is plenty.
1. In the last month, when did time fly? When did it drag?
2. What “whispers” have you been ignoring? What might they be telling you?
3. What limitations have you been fighting against that might actually be gifts?
For a few days, keep a simple two-column log:
The moments time flew or you felt larger.
The moments you shrank or watched the clock.
What do the ‘fills’ have in common? That’s a clue toward your why.
You’re not trying to change your life this week — only to read it more honestly.
The whispers are easy to dismiss in the moment. Written down, they’re harder to ignore — and more useful.
The restlessness or fatigue that keeps returning.
What would have to change for it to quiet?
Something you keep forcing.
What might that limit be protecting or pointing toward?
The whisper you’ll stop ignoring — and what you think it’s guiding you toward:
“Pay attention to what makes you feel most alive. That aliveness is not a distraction from your purpose — it is the trail of it.”
— synthesis of all three authors
Fear, ego, and ‘should’ — and how they might be pointing you home.
